“If you compare the 2006 American Community Survey with the 2000 Census, you’ll find that New Jersey’s Hispanic population has jumped by nearly a quarter-million this decade, That means the Latino population is up 22 percent, compared to 1 percent for non-Latinos.
The Mexican population is up 82 percent. Ecuadorians have nearly doubled their presence. Guatemalans: 122%.
In fact, if you add up the growth for individual Hispanic sub-groups, you’ll find an increase of more than 364,000 — nearly 118,000 greater than the overall increase in Hispanics.
How can the sum of the parts be so much greater than the whole? Because of one of the most misunderstood failings of the 2000 Census.”
