“Linda Chavez-Thompson, the first Hispanic woman elected to the AFL-CIO’s top leadership, announced Wednesday she is stepping down as executive vice president of the nation’s largest labor federation.

Chavez-Thompson, a native of Lubbock, Texas, will leave the AFL-CIO on Sept. 21.

“I am blessed to have had 12 years’ worth of wonderful experiences, meeting thousands of union members and workers who have given me hope that our labor movement continues to be a major factor in their lives,” Chavez-Thompson said in her resignation letter. “
