“A small number of the working class heroes who helped bring the Twin Towers to life every day, and who perished in the horrific terrorist attacks that brought them down, happened to be undocumented. A promise was made to their surviving families, that their status would be resolved. Yet, six years later, the lives of these family members continue to hang in the balance.

Legislation that would allow these families to adjust their status has remained on the shelf for too long. Earlier this year, another bill was introduced with bipartisan support, but again doesn’t appear to be on any fast track.

The holdup supposedly is a demand by a handful of Republicans. Their pre-condition: full disclosure of the identities of the 20 undocumented family members, nearly all of whom happen to be Latino. “
