“The GOP proposed:
# giving police a freer hand with illegal immigrants, including initiating deportations;
# punishing businesses that illegally hire undocumented workers, and
# closing public colleges to foreigners without valid visas.

Republicans said they hoped the proposals would help them defend in November narrowing majorities in the House of Delegates and Virginia Senate. “That’s what elections are all about,” said Sen. Jay O’Brien, R-Fairfax. “It’s a way of telling the public where Republicans are on this issue.”"
