“Moved by the 8.0 earthquake that struck Peru and left more than 500 dead and thousands displaced or otherwise affected by the quake, a group of world class musicians and dancers based in South Florida have decided to help the victims with a benefit concert that at the same time will celebrate the culture of Peru.
Among the artists participating will be Pepe Alva, renowned singer and songwriter that blends rock with sounds native to Peru; Kuyayky, a group of young musicians that work to promote Andean music; Yawar Chicchi, an enigmatic ensemble of Peruvian scissors dancers that stem from Huancavelica, one of the regions affected by the earthquake.
All the proceeds from the concert will go to the Red Cross, that has been working diligently in the Pisco, Ica, Cañete, Huancavelica, and Ayacucho regions since the earthquake struck. In addition to the admission tickets, additional monetary donations will be accepted throughout the concert. The organizers decided to opt for monetary donations to minimize the costs of transportation and other logistics as well as to reactivate local economies.
This Event is being organized by the Kuyayky Foundation and Kuy Productions, and presented by the Peruvian Consulate in Miami, Caribe Foods and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson.
“Ica is one of the hardest hit areas, it is also home to the Natural Reserve of Paracas, the Nazca Lines, both declared Patrimonies of Humanity- and Chincha, another one of the areas is the birthplace of Afro-Peruvian culture. This is our main reason for organizing this concert, to help the victims of this catastrophic event who have lost everything- while at the same time celebrating the cultural achievements of these regions,” said Fiorella Gardella, one of the organizers.
The Concert will take place this Saturday, September 1st at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium- 5400 NW 22nd Avenue in the city of Miami at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the box office.
