Sebastian, Aguilar bring velvet voices to rodeo – Texas

“Rodeos are big productions in Texas. We’re not just talking dirt, horses and bulls. No, sir. These days it’s indoor-arena extravaganzas complete with top-draw musical entertainment and plenty of food and booze.

A jaripeo, a Mexican rodeo, is no different. Just ask Mexican music legend Joan Sebastín, who headlined Sunday night’s jaripeo at American Airlines Center. In addition to the fenced-in, soil-filled ring that took up the arena’s floor, the stage on one end featured openers La Original Banda El Limón and San Antonio’s Tabu.

While Banda El Limón cranked up the tuba and horns, cowboys took their turns on ornery bulls that tossed them around. Tabu, four cumbia-singing women chirping to prerecorded tracks, was merely a space-filler. A space-waster is more apt. The choreography, the freeze-dried rhythms, the shocking pink-and-black outfits – it was total cheese, folks. “
