“GRANTED, IT’S NOT A FLATTERING portrait. A big-city mayor is caught having an affair with a well-known female TV reporter in the midst of a messy, public divorce from his wife of 20 years. The reporter is suspended for becoming involved with the mayor while still reporting on him. Some pundits say the affair is a fall from grace for the mayor, once a media darling. On Friday, another female reporter filed a complaint that the mayor’s bodyguard had manhandled her at a press conference.

It’s a story with all the makings of a good telenovela. More to the point, the public fallout from the affair between Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Telemundo reporter Mirthala Salinas has highlighted, in dramatic fashion, the growing presence and power of Latinos in the United States.”
