“Director John Singleton, famous for the gritty urban tales “Boyz in the Hood” and “Poetic Justice,” is attracting attention for a slightly different genre: the family drama.

Singleton, 40, produced “Illegal Tender,” the story of a mother-son bond, which opens in theaters tomorrow.

Like “Four Brothers,” the 2005 film he directed that told the story of adoptees avenging their mother’s murder, “Illegal Tender” explores the bonds of blood and friendship. “
