“The latest population estimates by the Census Bureau show that one of New Yorks fastest-growing counties is not only gaining minorities, but that their share of the total population is growing ”” from 22 percent in 2000 to almost 29 percent in 2006.
Leading the way are Hispanics, estimated to make up 15.4 percent of the countys 376,000-plus residents last year, compared with 11.6 percent in 2000. Thats slightly higher than the national average and the second-highest percentage in the state among counties outside New York City, trailing only Westchester.”
