“Originally known as the tree tomato or tomate de arbol in its native Peru, the tamarillo was renamed by savvy growers in New Zealand happy with the success of rechristening the Chinese gooseberry as “kiwi,” according to Dianne Onstad in “Whole Foods Companion.”
The exotic name appears to be an amalgamation of a Maori word “tama,” meaning leadership and a vaguely Spanish-sounding suffix, according to tamarillo.com, a Web site of the growers association in New Zealand, which is now the primary producer. It is popular in Central and South America, the Caribbean, parts of Asia, Australia and New Zealand, according to “Food Lover’s Companion” by Sharon Tyler Herbst.”
