““The first annual Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament held at El Conquistador Golf Resort in Puerto Rico on June 29, 2007 was a huge success,” said Idalia P. Fernandez, president of the Hispanic College Fund. “With the help of our sponsors we were able to provide two $2,500 scholarships for 2007 and commit to four scholarships for Puerto Rican students in 2008.”
The Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship Fund provides college scholarships to students in Puerto Rico, who, like Manuel, are committed to making an enduring contribution to their families and their community. The first two $2,500 scholarships went to Billy Medina from San Juan, Puerto Rico, a computer science major and raising junior at the Universidad Politecnica de Puerto Rico, the other went to Edgardo Samuel Pérez of Caguas, Puerto Rico, a mechanical engineering senior at the Universidad del Turabo.
“It is a great privilege that has been granted me and I am deeply thankful,” said Samuel Pérez. “This opportunity allows me to focus my efforts on being a student while following my dream of contributing to our society in the field of science.”
“The golf tournament raised sufficient funds to commit to awarding four scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year and set aside funds toward establishing a permanent endowment for scholarships for Puerto Rican students. Additionally, we raised enough funds to bring to over $8,000 monies that will be dedicated to mentoring programs for high school youth across the island through the Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico,” said Janet T. Farrell, widow of the late Manuel Candamo and Chair of the Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament.
Sponsors of the first annual Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament were: Casiano Communications, Lockheed Martin, WorldData Inc., Solena Group, Cristina Cabrera, Familia Morales Rubert, PhRMA, Benetti Family, Anthony Escriva, Aon, Babb Maldonado & Associates LLC, Carrión, Laffitte & Casellas, Clase 78 Academia Santa Maria, Cooperative de Ahorro y Crédito de Juana Díz, Dr. Joxel Garcí, Gilbane Development Company, INDUNIV, Lic. Juan Carlos Iturregui, Lic. Armando Del Valle, M&T bank, Netxar Technologies and UPRAA.
The Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Candamo family to provide financial support to Puerto Rican college and college-bound students. Manuel Candamo was a well-regarded businessman and entrepreneur in Washington, D.C. and in his native Puerto Rico. Manuel lost his battle with cancer in July, 2006 at the age of 46.
