“A U.S. judge has upheld special protections for illegal immigrants from El Salvador, saying the U.S. government violated its own immigrant detention standards because some Salvadoran detainees were denied access to legal materials, telephones and attorney visits.
The U.S. Department of Justice, which says the special protections are no longer needed, plans to appeal.
The judge said the 1988 injunction aimed at Salvadorans fleeing civil war in the 1980s was still necessary, saying immigrants from there continue to have legitimate asylum claims even after the wars end.”
