Cubans find strength, hope in family – Those who fled here grateful for new home – Rochester, New York

“Every Cuban who has ever left La Isla ”” including those who call Rochester home ”” shares a memory, a moment in time that distinctly defines each person, yet unites them all.

Its the vivid recollection of the day they left their Caribbean homeland.

“When I first landed here,” said Miguel Reyes, a lawyer who lives in Irondequoit, “I considered myself a refugee. Then I started to use Cuban-American. After 9/11, I dropped the Cuban altogether.”"
