“Since that first command position in 2000, Grau, 59, quickly rose within the department. Born in Puerto Rico, Grau moved with his family to Chicago at a young age. One of three children, including a younger sister who is a Chicago police officer, Grau joined the Police Department in 1981 and spent much of his career working in or commanding gang investigation units. He spent nine years on the FBIs Street Gang Investigation Squad and was later named deputy chief of the Organized Crime Division, which targets narcotics and gangs in the city.

After finishing among the 10 finalists for police superintendent in 2003,Grau became deputy superintendent of the Bureau of Investigative Services, putting him in charge of more than 2,300 officers in the detective and organized-crime divisions.”
