“More than 35 years ago, the building at 1319 Bright St. was the medical office of civil rights leader Dr. Hector P. Garcia and a hub of activity for the American GI Forum — a pioneer veterans and civil rights group that advocated for the rights of Hispanics.
The office remained open and functional until late 1995, when Garcia became ill.
Since his death on July 26, 1996, members of the American GI Forum and the National Archives and Historical Foundation of the American GI Forum have had plans to restore the vacant building in honor of the organization and its founder.”
