“The high percentage of Latino students at UC Merced could soon translate into millions of dollars in federal grants.

UC Merced and UC Riverside administrators are both pursuing plans to become a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution HSI ”” a designation reserved for universities and colleges where at least 25 percent of undergraduate students are Latino.

Campuses that meet HSI requirements are eligible to receive Title V grant funds through the U.S. Department of Education to help meet needs ranging from faculty development to tutoring programs, with the goal of enhancing their capacity to serve Latino and lowincome students.”
