“Friends and colleagues regard her as one of the pioneers of activism within the Manatee County Latino community.

“Without a doubt, she was probably one of the first Hispanics in the school system supporting the Hispanic community,” said Esperanza Gamboa, director of Manatee Technical Institutes Farmworker Education Program. “She has a beautiful personality.”

Two decades ago, Matos moved here from Puerto Rico with her family. In those years, she has become a mainstay for the Latino population, a “grandmother” to the community, she joke”
