The Spanish voice of Minnesota sports – Twins, Wolves and Vikings announcer Alfonso Fernandez taps a new audience.
Tagged: Guadalajara, Mexico, Minneapolis, Minnesota, radio, Spanish-languagePosted on: July 24th, 2007“Growing up in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, Alfonso Fernandez had athletic pursuits similar to those of everyone in his world.
“Like any Latin human being, I played soccer,” said the man who is the Spanish radio voice of the Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves. How Fernandez, 51, went from Mexico to the Metrodome is a wonderful tale of talent, chance and maybe even a little divine intervention.
Beyond that, his story illustrates how local professional sports teams are trying to tap into the “large, thriving, vibrant” Spanish-language market, today and for years to come. Fernandez is their messenger, delivered to Minnesota, he will tell you, by God in 2005.”
