“The 49-year-old Anaheim chauffer almost didn’t join the nearly 2,000 people who arrived at Saturdays citizenship fair at Santa Ana College.
Gerardo Sifuentes Lizalde, a 17-year U.S. resident, was on the fence about applying for citizenship. But then he thought of the upcoming 69 percent increase in application fees. He wondered whether the rules surrounding residency would someday unfavorably change. And he remembered the U.S. officials who stared him up and down after returning from a trip to Mexico.
“Some times I wondered if they’d let me back in,” Lizalde said.”
