Knowledge is Power!
“In response to the passage of anti-Hispanic legislation in Arizona (HB 2779) by the Governor and Legislature of Arizona, Elias Bermudez, Founder and CEO of Inmigrantes sin Fronteras, a prominent organization that works to protect the human rights of Hispanic immigrants, has called for a worker and consumer boycott of the 2008 Super Bowl to be held in Glendale, Arizona this February.
The legislation, which was recently signed into law by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, imposes strict sanctions against employers in the state who hire undocumented workers, revoking the licenses of businesses even if the hirings were unintentional.
“In spite of past abuses against Hispanics and minorities in our state, the legislators in Arizona have chosen to take out their frustrations on legal Spanish-speaking Americans,” said Bermudez. “Instead of telling the truth about our immigrant population and dispelling the myths,” he continued, “our politicians have allowed Spanish-speaking Americans to take it on the chin again. The lack of courage among our elected leaders here and in Washington, D.C., has created a situation in which America’s immigrants are treated as a detriment to our society instead of an asset. It’s another demonstration of the racist tendencies that our country has fallen prey to.”
In defense of their heritage as proud Americans who have always cherished the American Dream, as some of America’s earliest residents, and as decorated defenders of the United States of America, the Hispanic community is encouraged to take action. “We cannot allow our future generations to be subjected to prejudice and lies about our contributions to the story of America,” said Bermudez. “Arizona’s leaders are certain they don’t need these contributions. They are sure that Arizona’s history has not been forged by the contributions of Hispanic Americans.”
According to Bermudez, the new immigration law will hurt legal Hispanic workers, the economy will suffer, and large employers will leave the state. Employers will also be forced to treat Hispanic employees as a threat to their businesses. “This is discriminatory against Hispanic-owned businesses and will drive more businesses underground into the cash economy,” he said.
Bermudez calls on all people of all ethnicities, especially those of Hispanic descent, to participate in a worker walkout and complete financial boycott of Arizona businesses during the week of the 2008 NFL Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona this February.
