El Cantante: great music, little understanding

“”El Cantante,” the new movie on the life of salsa singer Hector Lavoe and starring Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, is a two-hour film full of great music, exciting concert footage and compelling scenes.

But there is little in the way of understanding what demons drive Lavoe to self-destruct until he died at the age of 46. Without that insight, it is hard to see Lavoe as a sympathetic character in the movie.”
