Spanish American Veteran Association Receive Honorary Recognition on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 by Hispanic Advocacy Coalition at Brevard County Government Center

The Spanish American Veterans Association will receive an honorary recognition by the Hispanic Advocacy Coalition. They will be honored on Wednesday, July 25 at 12:00 PM, at the Brevard County Government Center, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Building C, Room 129, in Viera.

The Spanish American Veterans Association was started by United States Army Retired Sargent First Class Raul Rivera, along with fellow Hispanic veterans Tony Cortes and Calvin L. Sanchez in January 1991.

The purpose of the Spanish American Veterans Association is to find and unite those of Hispanic descent that are serving, and have served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Also, they promote cultural preservation, community awareness, social interaction and personal development in veteran and community relations.

Retired Staff Sargent of the United States Army for 24 years, Rafael Rodriguez, President of the Spanish American Veterans Association said, “It is an honor to be recognized by the Hispanic Advocacy Coalition for our service to this great country and for what we do in the community. We are very grateful.”

Some of the groups accomplishments include: participating in a special mission with Patrick Air Force Base to honor the 65th Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, Borinqueneers in Puerto Rico; being the Color Guard for the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall; participating every year at the Massing of the Colors, held by Brevard Community College, among other ceremonial duties. They assist veterans in all ways that they can including: directing them to get their benefits due, collecting donations and by being a support group. They assist the community by participating as Color Guards for different events, toy drives for Three Kings Day (The Epiphany), food and clothes drives for the less fortunate
