Hinojosa introduces legislation to combat dropout crisis
Tagged: studentPosted on: July 1st, 2007“Congressman Rubn Hinojosa D-TX, Chair of the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness, today introduced the Graduation Promise Act, which would set aside $2.5 billion each year to reform Americas “dropout factories” – an estimated 2,000 high schools where a high percentage of students never graduate.
Currently, almost one-third of Americas high school students, about 1.2 million every year, fail to finish in four years. The situation for minority students is even worse: Only about 55 percent of African-American students and 52 percent of Hispanic students graduate on time, compared to 78 percent of white students. In fact, only half of African-American students and 60 percent of Latino students-compared to 89 percent of white students-attend high schools in which graduation is the norm.”
