Controversy lingers over deportation powers – Waukegan, Illinois

“Local Hispanic leaders still hope the Waukegan City Council backs off the idea of police gaining authority to enforce federal immigration laws, but they are satisfied with some assurances provided by Mayor Richard Hyde.

About 1,500 mostly Hispanic spectators jammed a town hall meeting Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, attended by Hyde, to receive more information on the issue. Waukegan police estimated another 5,000 people were around the church, unable to get inside because of fire code regulations.”
