“The state of Guerrero, where Mexico’s independence was born, is making it easier for visitors to trace Mexicos journey from pre-Hispanic civilization to Spanish colony to modern tourist mecca. The state government and local visitors bureaus are putting the finishing touches on the Jaguar Route, a new tourist trail that highlights the regions cultural hot spots between the highland silver center of Taxco and the Pacific resort city of Acapulco.

Taxco, 110 miles southwest of Mexico City, is known for silver crafts, which reflect its history as a colonial mining center. Tourists can also visit the Santa Prisca Church, with its Baroque ornamentation, frescoes and golden altarpieces. The next stop, Ixcateopan, is the burial site of Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor, and contains the ruins of an Aztec ceremonial and commercial center.”
