Latino parents tired of school squeeze – Chicago’s Southwest Side
Tagged: Chicago, Illinois, mobile, parents, population, studentPosted on: June 26th, 2007“About 37,000 Chicago Public Schools grammar students live on the Southwest Side. But the public schools only have room for 22,000.
Area schools squeeze in more with mobile units, annexes and rented space. Still, thousands of students in the burgeoning Latino area must be bused out of their neighborhoods for school every day or learn in packed neighborhood classrooms.
Legislators, advocates and parents decried the Southwest Sides overcrowding at a hearing Monday. Of the 25 elementary schools in the area, 21 are crowded — most severely. The schools are dealing with skyrocketing enrollment as the areas Latino population grows.”
