“Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) (NASDAQ: SBSA) announced today that Renán Almendárez Coello, a charismatic host on Los Angeles’ KLAX 97.9 La Raza, is packing his bags, preparing his agenda and bringing his “Tropa Loca” to Washington D.C. on June 18th to lead the caravan for “Dreams Across America”.
Almendárez Coello, better known as “El Cucuy,” immigrated to this country in the 1980s and, like many others before him, was inspired by the “American Dream.” Through hard work and dedication, he has become one of the most successful and popular Hispanic radio hosts in the United States. His show airs Monday through Friday from 4:00 AM to 11:00 AM on 97.9 La Raza.
“My dreams for a better life brought me to this country from my native Honduras, and I knew, from the beginning that it would be a lonely path,” remembers El Cucuy. “Any success I have in life I owe to my listeners for seeing me as a friend, to whom they can relate. No matter how successful I become, however, I will always remember my roots as an immigrant and will champion any just cause to help fellow immigrants.”
The caravan started in California on June 13th and is looking to catch the attention of US legislators for the need to create immigration reforms that are just and fair. Before reaching the US capital on the 19th, the caravan will have picked up a total of 100 “dreamers” from Los Angeles, San Antonio, Chicago, Miami, New York, and Boston. These individuals will then rally and campaign in front of congress in order to testify to just how much an immigrant can achieve in this country if they are allowed to freely demonstrate their capabilities and talents.
One of those dreamers will be El Cucuy who just last year initiated the campaign “Votos Por América” in the hopes of getting one million Hispanics registered to vote in the general elections.
“His tour through several key states with a large concentration of Hispanics has garnered such outstanding results that the number of registered Hispanics is expected to jump from a mere 14% to an impressive 65%,” said Mercedes Ramirez, Director of the El Cucuy Foundation.
To make “Dreams Across America” a reality, Almendárez, the “El Cucuy Foundation,” 97.9 La Raza and Spanish Broadcasting System have joined forces with community organizations, businessmen and women, as well as religious and community leaders. All of them believe that this caravan is not just an expression of the dreams of millions of Hispanics residing in this country, but also an expression of their hopes for the future.
