Memphis Police: Dealing With Language Barriers

Tagged: , , , ,

“Getting to the bottom of shootings like the one in Berclair Monday, June 11, 2007 is becoming more challenging for Memphis Police who find themselves running into an English/Spanish language barrier more and more often.

So as Memphis Latino population grows, what is the MPD doing to bridge the language gap? According to Jose Velazquez, Executive Director of Latino Memphis, the department is trying to hire more spanish speaking officers. He tells Eyewitness News Everywhere, “I just had a very hopeful conversation with Juan Gonzalez from the police academy, and they have a mandate internally to go out and bring in bilingual individuals who can be that bridge between the community and the police force.”"
