“It was shouted in the subway stations, and through the streets of Manhattan during the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, now in its 50th year.

The crowd, numbering in the tens of thousands, lined both sides of Fifth Avenue between 44th and 86th streets. Many held Puerto Rican flags, and everyone had a different way of carrying them. Some tapped them on the ground like canes. Others stuck them through their waistbands. A few folded them neatly and hung them from their back pockets.”
