The crowd, numbering in the tens of thousands, lined both sides of Fifth Avenue between 44th and 86th streets. Many held Puerto Rican flags, and everyone had a different way of carrying them. Some tapped them on the ground like canes. Others stuck them through their waistbands. A few folded them neatly and hung them from their back pockets.”
