“Hispanic women represent 25 percent of the 300 to 400 women SafePlace shelters each year. They are the agency’s largest minority population, she said. Thats also true countywide, though Hispanic residents accounted for 5.2 percent of the population in 2005, according to the U.S. Census.

SafePlace launched the Spanish support group last year to reach out to that demographic. A two-year, $50,000 grant from the Department of Social and Health Services allowed SafePlace to hire Alejandro Rugarcia, who leads the Spanish support group as well as acting as an Asian culture advocate.”
