Tagged: California, latina, Los Angeles, MexicoPola Lopez is an eminent painter who is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Los Angeles, and whose work is a multifaceted array of abstract and figurative paintings, which infuses various mythologies into its demulcent, desert palate of vivacious tones. By making reference, in this show, to the myths of Narcissus, or Narcisia, and Echo, through the filter of a Chicana perspective, Lopez responds to the echoes within herself, echoes which grapple with her own identity as a Chicana artist caught on the threshold between the narcissistic observations of the beauty of her culture and the communicative and feminine mirror of Echo, the lover of Narcissus, who resides in the realm of spirit, and who beckons Narcissus from the realm of matter and self-destruction. By way of this mythology, Lopez endeavors to deconstruct her old identity, and to unearth a new identity for herself, parallel to what she knows as her own, and she intends to do this through her art””she intends to effect a paradigm shift through her paintings.
Lopez, furthermore, draws from a rich and diverse, southwestern cultural heritage, which provides additional color and variety to her work, and which emphasizes a Mestizo/Latino and indigenous tradition that has suffused her symbolic work as a professional artist for 25 years, and has installed her art in such places as the White House. By employing her copious influences and support, such as her father, a poet and a dreamer, who has encouraged her art from its inception, Lopez exhibits an august body of work with spiritual vision and incendiary composition, instilling life and vibrant flavor in her unique paintings, and provoking the viewer of her dynamic work.
This exhibition will run at the Bluebird Art House from June 9th – July 7th, 2007. The artist reception will be Saturday, June 9th, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
