“When Earl Brown opened his used-furniture shop in 2001, there were no businesses on his street that focused on catering to Hispanic customers.

Now, he’s surrounded by such shops as job opportunities in construction and other businesses have transformed this town of about 32,000 into a magnet for immigrants from Mexico and Central America. But Brown, a 49-year-old North Carolina native, isn’t celebrating the diversity.

He has placed signs in front of his store that read “Honk if you hate Spanish” and “Honk if you loath sic Mexico & its flag.”"
