“At 59, Córdova is the eldest of 12 children in a Hispanic family. Her father was with the U.S. State Department and she was born in Paris, France. The family lived in Germany before settling east of Los Angeles.

Córdova received her bachelors degree cum laude from Stanford, not in astrophysics but in English. The physics Ph.D. came in 1979 from the California Institute of Technology.”
