“Last fall, he hired construction workers and quietly built bleachers, a stage and rings on his farm. Just weeks ago, to the dismay of many of his neighbors, he held an “open house” for Rio Grande. He estimated 6,000 people, mostly Hispanic, attended.

By Marsh’s account, the event was an enormous success.

“My dream is even bigger than this,” he said.

So last week he headed to the county’s Board of Adjustments meeting to petition for the special-use permit he needs to hold the event on a regular basis. He brought letters of support from 34 business owners, one of whom said his number of customers tripled on the day of the open house.”
