“Grupo Bimbo, parent company of Bimbo Bakeries USA, today announced the winners of the second Bimbo Pan-American Prize in Nutrition, Science, and Food Technology. Among the seven winning projects, two were conducted by American researchers.

Amy Proulx, PhD candidate with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Iowa State University was recognized for her entry, “Fermentation and lactic acid addition enhance iron bioavailability of maize.”

Peter Joseph Havel, Ph.D, Research Endocrinologist of the Department of Nutrition, University of California was recognized for his entry, “Consumption of fructose -but not glucose- sweetened beverages for 10 weeks increases postprandial triglyceride and apolipoprotein-B concentrations in overweight/obese women.”

Both Dr. Proulx and Dr. Havel will receive a $5,000 recognition for their works. The awards were presented by Daniel Servitje, CEO of Grupo Bimbo and Roberto Servitje, President of the Board of Directors of Grupo Bimbo last month.

“Winning the Bimbo Pan-American Prize in Nutrition, Science, and Food Technology has been a great opportunity and I appreciate the recognition. I am grateful for the acknowledgment of our research and I enjoyed meeting fellow researchers at the awards ceremony,” said Dr. Havel. “Grupo Bimbo is setting an excellent example for their industry and I commend them for encouraging new research.”

Grupo Bimbo’s Pan-American Award in Nutrition, Science and Food Technology was developed in 2004 as part of Grupo Bimbo’s “Committed to Your Health” program, an initiative to improve health and nutrition. “Society’s health and nutrition are fundamental for Grupo Bimbo; thus, the idea of creating a project such as the Pan-American Nutrition Award is to promote research and favor institutions working to improve quality of life in different countries,” said Daniel Servitje.

Entries were collected from Mexico, the United States, Central America and South America between January 1 and October 15, 2006. Over 70 research projects were submitted by professionals from a variety of public and private institutions, universities, centers and laboratories in the fields of Human Nutrition, Science and/or Food Technology. The research projects were evaluated by an independent scientific jury, formed by renowned researchers and experts in the areas of Human Nutrition, Science and, Food Technology in each of the participating areas. In forming this jury, much care was placed on maintaining as much balance and parity as possible between the disciplines and institutions.
