“The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) will bestow its prestigious Leadership in International Relations Award for 2007 to Dr. Rodrigo de Rato, International Monetary Fund Managing Director. The award will be presented during CHLI’S Annual Hispanic Leadership Dinner on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The Board of Directors of the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute created the Leadership in International Relations Award to recognize individuals and organizations that provide leadership in fostering a better world community, especially as it relates to relations between U.S. Hispanics and the international community. Dr. Rodrigo de Rato y Figaredo was chosen for this prestigious award by the CHLI Board of Directors due to his exceptional achievements, both as the former Vice President for Economic Affairs and Minister of the Economy of Spain, and as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
“CHLI is honored to present its International Leadership Award to Rodrigo de Rato in recognition of his exceptional leadership and achievements throughout his distinguished public service career. Dr. de Rato’s tenure as Vice President for Economic Affairs and Minister of Economy for the government of Spain was truly historic due to its outstanding achievements in job creation and other key aspects of economic growth. And as the first Spanish Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Dr. de Rato has brought a unique insight to the task of international economic development,” said CHLI Chairman Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.
The CHLI Leadership in International Relations Award is one of two yearly prestigious recognitions bestowed by the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute. In addition to Dr. de Rato, who is the ninth Managing Director of the IMF, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives J. Dennis Hastert will be receiving the CHLI Leadership in Public Service Award. In 2006, CHLI honored U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez.
Established in 2003, CHLI works to promote new and alternative approaches to challenges faced by the 40 million Hispanic and Portuguese Americans living in the United States today. Through educational partnerships, scholarships, leadership programs, academic seminars and other events, CHLI provides opportunities for discussion and exploration of strategic solutions for community challenges that in turn, benefit the nation as a whole. “
