The national Hispanic health campaign, “Celebra La Vida Con Salud” (Celebrate A Healthy Life) launches its Spring 2007 health festival tour in San Diego this weekend. Celebra equips Hispanics with information on illness prevention and health promotion for illnesses disproportionately impacting the Hispanic community. Celebra also offers festival participants free medical screenings for HIV/AIDS, cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and BMI.
At the San Diego festival, Celebra will unveil a new HPV and cervical cancer education exhibit sponsored by Merck to educate Latinas about what they can do to prevent these illnesses. The rate of cervical cancer is approximately 50% higher among Hispanic women than non-Hispanic white women in the U.S.

Hispanics have disproportionately high rates of several major illnesses and diseases, including HIV/AIDS, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and obesity, as well as and some types of cancers, including cervical cancer.The Celebra health festival addresses these health issues and provides information about national and local consumer resources available to Hispanics in San Diego. Private, public sector, media and community-based partners and sponsors join together to reach this important population. The leading partner and sponsor of Celebra is the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Private partners and sponsors include Terra.com, NikeGO, Merck, CardioChek, Aquakleen and the American Red Cross. Local partners include Done Vida California, Latino 5-A-Day, La Maestra Community Health Centers, San Diego American Indian Health Center, San Ysidro Health Center, Operation Samahnan, Pacific Sleep Medicine Services, Clinica Medica Central, Mex Doctors, Community Research Foundation, and the Center for Community Ophthalmology.
