Minnesota HIV Rates 2006 – Rates in Latino Community Show Alarming Increase
Tagged: HIV, Minnesota, populationPosted on: April 17th, 2007“In 2006, 318 new cases of HIV were reported in Minnesota, a five percent increase from the previous year. Representing less than four percent of the state’s population, the Latino community showed an alarming increase from 8 percent in 2005, to 14 percent of the total in 2006.
“In Minnesota, HIV continues to be a serious health threat for gay and bisexual men, reinforcing the need for targeted prevention efforts,” says Lorraine Teel, Minnesota AIDS Project MAP executive director. Of all new males cases reported in 2006, male-to-male sex is the only risk factor for 64 percent of all new cases of HIV. Thirty-five percent of newly diagnosed Minnesotans live in Twin Cities’ suburbs, a trend that has shown a steady increase over the past five years.”
