Knowledge is Power!
“For most of California’s wine history, it was all about the Italians: Gallo, Mondavi, Sebastiani, Simi, Martini and the like. Even most of the field workers had surnames ending in vowels.
And while Mexican immigrants now perform virtually all of the hard labor in the vineyards, only very recently have a few Hispanics become winemakers or winery owners. Today, a trek through Napa’s vineyards uncovers names such as Renteria, Ceja and Madrigal, and few winemakers are more respected than Shafer’s Elias Fernandez.”
