Burns, PBS have history of not including Hispanics – Janet Murguia
Tagged: documentary, Film, Janet Murguia, pbs, populationPosted on: April 11th, 2007“World War II was an epochal event for our country and for racial and ethnic relations in the United State. An upcoming PBS documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns will tell this story, but with a glaring omission. The series apparently ignores both the contributions that Latinos made to the war effort and the effect the postwar period had in shaping the destiny of Hispanics, the nation’s largest minority.
By most accounts, Hispanics were disproportionately represented among frontline casualties in the war and also were among the most highly decorated. Estimates suggest that perhaps as many as 500,000 Hispanics fought in the war, far exceeding the community’s share of the population. At a time when some in this country question the loyalty and patriotism of the nation’s growing Latino community, this is a story that needs to be told.”
