“South Florida will be well-represented at the 2007 Hispanic Business magazine Woman of the Year Awards, as several notable Hispanic women from the region will be honored or speaking at the event taking place April 26th, 2007 at Caesars Palace Las Vegas. The fifth annual Woman of the Year event celebrates the accomplishments of successful U.S. Hispanic women who have made a significant impact in the realms of business, government, and academia.
Asset Management Associates LLC CEO Maria Elena Lagomasino was named Woman of the Year by the magazine for 2007. Though Cuban-born Lagomasino grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut, she now makes her home in South Florida and is based at the AMA offices in Palm Beach Gardens.”
Leading and moderating the panel discussion during the daytime symposium at WOY 2007 will be fellow South Floridian Anne Marie Estevez. A 2006 Woman of the Year finalist, Ms. Estevez is a partner in the Labor and Employment Practice of Miami law firm Morgan Lewis & Bockius. Her firm is also sponsoring one of four Woman of the Year Winner’s Circle Scholarships, awarded to outstanding students personifying the next generation of accomplished Hispanic women.
Selected to receive Morgan Lewis and Bockius’ $1,500 Winner’s Circle Scholarship is University of Miami senior Carmen Garcia, who grew up in South Florida and is scheduled to graduate from UM cum laude in Spring 2007 with a major in Finance and a minor in Chemistry. At UM, Ms. Garcia co-founded Business Scrubs, an organization whose mission is to teach pre-health students business principles necessary for managing a successful practice. She will begin dental school in August at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia and plans to apply for the dual DMD-MBA program offered by the Wharton School of Business. The Winner’s Circle Scholarship also includes travel to Las Vegas and accommodations at Caesars Palace for the 2007 WOY Awards.
2007 Woman of the Year finalist Maria Azua has deep South Florida roots, as well. Though she now makes her home in New York state, Ms. Azua attended graduate school in computer science at the University of Miami and an MBA program at Florida Atlantic University. She is now IBM vice-president of technology and innovation at IBM’s offices in Somers, New York.
