“Organizacion Miss America Latina, Inc. named 20-year-old Yalena Matos of Portland, Oregon the new MISS LATINA US to take over the titleholder duties from Melissa Marin, who cannot fulfill them because of her studies. This is the first time a Miss Latina US winner is replaced in the history of this national pageant.
“Our pageants encourage young Latinas to put education first,” stated Acirema Alayeto, organization president, “and while we are disappointed that Miss Marin will not complete her title reign, we support her decision to take advantage of a summer college scholarship she received recently that conflicts with her competing in Mexico.” About her successor, Alayeto said, “She exemplifies another of the outstanding young women who participate in our program and make us proud. We are confident Miss Matos will make an excellent Miss Latina US.”
A strong-favorite to win the Miss Latina US Pageant last September 29, 2006 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, Yalena garnered first runner-up honors as the 18-year-old Melissa, a high school student from Rhode Island, took home the coveted crown. Born in Guantanamo, Cuba, the new titleholder came to the US at the age of twelve. At 16 she entered her first pageant and shes been successfully competing and modeling since then. Pursuing higher education is a greater ambition than the catwalks, though, and as a student of Business Administration, Yalena has excelled academically, maintaining Honor Roll status for six quarters to date. Says the exotic beauty, “I really enjoy modeling, but I dont think its everything in life. I would like to prepare myself intellectually and acquire my Bachelors degree to eventually open my own company.”
Yalena prepares now for the next level of competition, the international finals on June 15 at the Palenque Theatre of the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. She will represent the USA and compete with 30 other delegates from around the world for the Miss Latin America title currently held by Melissa Quesada of the USA.
The state of Oregon has never had a Miss Latina US before this; however, it is the sixth time someone of Cuban heritage has held the title out of 18 titleholders– the last one being from Florida back in 1998.
Organizacion Miss America Latina, Inc., based in Miami, FL, is the oldest and largest producer of Latina pageants worldwide. Beginning in 1981, founding President Acirema Alayeto created an international pageant system where Latin American women from around the world annually compete for the title of MISS LATIN AMERICA®, best known worldwide as “MISS AMERICA LATINA.” The company also produces the annual MISS LATINA USâ„¢ and MISS TEEN US LATINAâ„¢ national pageants.
