Riverside veteran finds passion for art after pain of war – Simon Gonzalez
Tagged: California, Los Angeles, MexicoPosted on: April 3rd, 2007“Simon Gonzalez feels the pain every time he takes a step, the result of combat wounds received 56 years ago while serving with the Armys 2nd Infantry Division in Korea.
When Uncle Sam offered Gonzalez about $2 a day for his war injuries, he traveled to Mexico to study art, creating a career as a sketch artist, photographer and painter. Most of his work he kept, choosing instead to sell prints, posters and postcards of his creations, which feature streetscapes and portraits bursting with eye-popping color.
Art, he says, lets him celebrate life.”
