Knowledge is Power!
“When patrolling Northwest Volusia, Deputy Roy Galarza keeps a stack of Volusia County Sheriffs Office job applications in his patrol car that he hopes to pass out to new recruits.
Galarza, 23, is one of only a handful of Spanish-speaking deputies in the county, and perhaps the only one to come from Northwest Volusias Mexican immigrant community. Thats a distinction he and his boss, Sheriff Ben Johnson, hope to change.
Language and cultural barriers — along with fears of deportation — have bred mistrust of law enforcement that leaves many in the community vulnerable, particularly victims of domestic violence, immigrant advocates say.”
