Through video diaries and other footage, the documentary Maquilapolis, one of 36 films screening at this year’s CineMujer Film Festival at the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, addresses health risks, labor-rights issues, and the daily grind these women work through as cogs in a global enonomy ”” making merchandise such as televisions, clothing, batteries, and IV tubes.
“We were interested in looking at globalization through the eyes of the factory workers,” Funari said. “We really wanted to see the daily impact in a city that is at the forefront of this issue.””
