“The first time I met the indicted Al Sanchez–the former commissioner of Mayor Richard Daley’s Streets and Sanitation Department–he was supervising a cup of coffee.

Al was leading a coffee run for his political boss, making sure not a drop was spilled on Commercial Avenue. It was a cold Election Day on the South Side more than 20 years ago.

Al’s buddy, Gilbert “Chiefy” Delgado, was trotting across the street with the steaming cup, and Al, a former decorated paratrooper, trotted alongside stiffly on the heels of his black shoes, the way people run when theyre cold.”
