Remembering the “Plantadas” – National Association of Cuban-American Women honors ex-political prisoners
Tagged: Cuba, Cuban, latina, New Jersey, prison, reporterPosted on: March 25th, 2007“In honor of “Women’s History Month” the Union City-based National Association of Cuban-American Women NACAW will be hosting their annual prestigious Elena Mederos Awards, which recognizes women in leadership roles who have contributed to the advancement of Hispanics in the United States.
This Saturday, the association is honoring a large group of ex-political prisoners known as “Plantadas” the planted ones or firm ones, who refused to conform to the new communist government.
The “Plantadas” were a group of over 2,000 women that were punished and incarcerated in Cuba for refusing to accept Communism, after Fidel Castro came into power. Some women were incarcerated for almost 20 years, and endured torture at the hands of Castors regime. “
