That, and one candidate had an English name, while the other, despite being a native New Yorker, had a Hispanic name.
“If it had been Texas, I think I would have been successful,” said Luis Olivera, a former prosecutor who just missed becoming North Carolina’s first elected Hispanic judge. “Here in North Carolina, unfortunately, the mind-set is if you’re Hispanic, you’re here illegally.””
