“Nearly 40,000 votes were cast in a potentially historic judicial election in November in Cumberland County, and the difference between the winner and loser was just 760 votes.

That, and one candidate had an English name, while the other, despite being a native New Yorker, had a Hispanic name.

“If it had been Texas, I think I would have been successful,” said Luis Olivera, a former prosecutor who just missed becoming North Carolina’s first elected Hispanic judge. “Here in North Carolina, unfortunately, the mind-set is if you’re Hispanic, you’re here illegally.””
