Hispanic PR Wire and PRSA Co-Host Palm Beach Media Panel with Leading Hispanic Media on March 21

“Hispanic PR Wire and the Palm Beach Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America PRSA are hosting a top-notch Hispanic media panel at the West Palm Beach Marriott in Downtown West Palm Beach on Wednesday, March 21.The program will feature the following media representatives: Carlos Mahecha, producer for Hablando con la Comunidad; Deborah Ramirez, editor for El Sentinel; Tenchy Salas, president and CEO for Portada magazine; Jose R. Uzual, editor for El Latino Semanal; Ana M. Valdes, staff reporter for La Palma.

Hispanic PR Wire Corporate Communications Manager and PRSA’s Miami Chapter President Natalia Flores, APR will serve as program moderator. Similar media panels and other professional development workshops will be conducted year-round at dozens of PRSA chapters throughout the nation during the “2007 Hispanic PR & Marketing Strategies Tour.”

Featuring insights and tips on how to successfully conduct media outreach with today’s leading Hispanic press outlets, the panel aims to teach attendants the do’s and don’ts on pitching news to Hispanic media.

Carlos Mahecha, producer for Hablando con la Comunidad
Carlos Mahecha produces Palm Beach County’s first and only Spanish TV magazine, Hablando con la Comunidad. He enjoys helping different communities and is committed to providing them with current local news, weather, hurricanes and emergency situations by reporting on TV and radio 24/7. Mahecha was honored with an Emmy Regional Award in 2004. He has received several local awards from Spanish organizations because of his involvement in the Spanish community. Mahecha was born in Valencia, Spain and grew up in Bogota, Colombia.

Deborah Ramirez, editor for El Sentinel
Deborah Ramirez is the editor for El Sentinel, a Spanish-language weekly newspaper launched by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel for the growing Hispanic community in Broward and Palm Beach counties. El Sentinel has the responsibility to inform its readers about what’s going on, accurately and honestly. The publication plays an important role in shaping opinion and giving a voice to those who have none as well as having the added role of helping immigrants find their way in a new society. Previously, Ramirez was a municipal reporter at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel prior to covering news about Cuba and joining the Editorial Board of the publication. Before moving to Miami in 1992, Ramirez was a journalist for 10 years at the San Juan Star, an English-language daily newspaper in Puerto Rico. She is a graduate from the University of Puerto Rico, where she earned a degree in social science, and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Tenchy Salas, president and CEO for Portada magazine
Tenchy Salas is president and CEO of Etiqueta Publications, Inc. and Portada Magazine, which is distributed in South Florida as well as Orlando, Tampa, Dominican Republic, Panama, Venezuela, and Aruba. She worked with TIME Magazine and Reader’s Digest Selections in Spanish for the Venezuelan market. Salas is considered an expert in public relations having served as public relations director for Intercontinental Hotel and director of public relations and marketing for Eurobuilding Hotel in Venezuela. She has vast experience coordinating events around the world and serves on numerous boards for non-profit organizations.

Jose R. Uzual, editor for El Latino Semanal
Jose R. Uzal, born in Cuba, is the editor of Latino Semanal, the largest and oldest Spanish weekly in South Florida. Uzal is also the General Manager of WBWPTV Channel 57, the first local Spanish TV station in Palm Beach County. He writes a weekly column, published in 17 Spanish publications across the U.S., about issues concerning Hispanics. Uzal is a graduate of Barry University and the father of three grown children.

Ana M. Valdes, staff reporter for La Palma
Ana Valdés is a reporter for La Palma, the Spanish newspaper of The Palm Beach Post. She began working at La Palma in December 2003, and was a part of the team that launched the publication in February 2004. During the last three years, she has also been part of the group of journalists that have helped La Palma grow into a four-section newspaper that circulates in all of Palm Beach County, as well as Martin and St. Lucie counties. Before joining La Palma, Valdes was an intern at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, where she worked with the medical reporting team for a summer and later for the Community News sections. Previously, and while obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Print Journalism and Spanish at the University of Miami, she worked as a clerk/reporter for The Miami Herald.
