Knowledge is Power!
“At a time when overall workplace fatalities are dipping, deaths for Hispanics rose 13.6 percent in 2004 and nearly 2 percent more in 2005, the most recent number available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2005, there were 917 workplace deaths recorded for Latinos, the highest number since the BLS began keeping statistics.
Tisha Tallman, a consulting attorney to the firm Moskowitz & Carraway, warns the numbers may not tell the whole story. She believes injuries may be underreported because some Latinos may not know if they qualify for workers compensation, which is not based on legal status. Any company that employs three or more workers is required to have workers compensation insurance.”
